What's New in Overbrook Gardens

776 Wall Project

The Association is working to get the wood fence that boarders our neighborhood along SR 776 replaced with an attractive precast concrete wall.  There is an enormous amount of work that has to be done to convert this eye sore to an appealing wall that will compliment our community.  It will be necessary for the entire community, not just the Association, to support this long-overdue project.  The Wall Committee will keep us updated with progress and identify opportunities for each of us to provide support.  Click on the "776 Wall Project" icon at the left to access the current information.

Christmas Lights Contest Winners

The first contest in Overbrook Gardens was a de"light"ful affair.  So many homes were gaily decorated and the Christmas spirit was in evidence on so many streets.  It certainly brought pleasure to all who saw the homes. and gave the judges a difficult a task in casting their votes.

The winners are as follows:

1st Place to Dave & Kathleen Chase at 1460 Fairview.  They won a $75.00 gift  certificate to Gulf View Grill;

2nd Place to Christopher & Mar Watson at 1420 Fairless.  They won a $50.00 gift certificate to any advertiser  of their choice from the 2011 directory;

3rd Place to Shawn & Lynn Frost at 1420 Overbrook Road.  They won a paid membership to the homeowners association for 2012;

Honorable Mention to Rodney & Krista Martin at 1911 Greenlawn.  They won a $20.00 gift certificate to any advertiser of their choice from the 2011 directory.

A giant "thank you" to all who decorated their homes....you may not have won a prize, but you brought pride and joy to our community and neighbors.  AND, the home owners association hopes to do this again next year as well.

Happy New Year To All l!!!!!

Maintenance Work on Association Properties

The maintenance work parties have started their autumn work program.  Volunteers will be working throughout the neighborhood to catch up after the summer hiatus.  They will be working on Thursday mornings from 9 AM to about noon.  Contact Harvey White, 475-5725, if you can help.

2011 Christmas Party

The annual community Christmas party was held on Dec. 4 at Boca Royale restaurant.  The atmosphere was festive with live dinner music, the food terrific, the drinks intoxicating, and great fun was had by all.  There were door prizes, a 50/50 drawing, and dancing after dinner.  Next year's party will be on Dec. 2. 2012 at the same place.   Click here for impromptu photos taken at the party.

Suggestion Page

The hosting service that houses our web site has upgraded the operating system on their web servers and has discontinued the use of MS FrontPage extensions on their servers.   This means that some of the features of the Association web site, as currently configured, will no longer function.  Our biggest change is that the Suggestion page will no longer work and has been removed.  If you have any suggestions or comments please contact the Board via the email address listed on the Board page.

Roundabout at Jacaranda & Venice Ave.

The new two lane roundabout is open and seems to be functioning well.  Click here for a County video on rules for safely navigating the roundabout.

Directory Updates

Since our Overbrook Gardens Directory is an annual publication, any changes that occur after printing are not available to our residents until the following year.  Oftentimes, residents change their phone service and forget to share the new number with us, so we continue to publish an inaccurate number for them.  In addition, as new folks move into our community, we have not been able to share their information until the next directory is published.

A new feature of the web site is to collect changes that all residents would like of their listing in the Directory.  This Directory Updates page can be accessed via the new button in the main menu on the left.  Please check your listing and contact us if you would like a change to be made.  Your new information will be entered in the membership database for use in publishing the next directory, and you will be asked for permission to post the change on the web site Listing your information is completely voluntary.  In addition, if you would like to have your email address listed, this can be done here as well.  If there is a significant interest among our residents to have their email addresses listed, we can consider revising our listings in our 2012 directory.  We welcome your comments.  To list a change please contact Paula Cullison, 474-0304, or Jack Rienks, 473-3179.

Pet Registry Now Online

In response to the large number of lost pets recently we have set up a registry for pets in our neighborhood.  Click on the Pet Registry menu button at the left to access this new service.

Scoop that Poop

More pets seem to be inhabiting our closely populated area which increases the threat to the cleanliness of our underground and channel waters.  Pet owners need to realize that poop left on yards and streets finds its way quickly to our boating waters, and eventually contaminates underground water.  Property owners expect those who walk pets around the neighborhood to be responsible for their pets.  This includes picking up their poop which can be done easily and safely by using plastic bags and small implements.   More information can be found here and here.

Pet and Bike Security Patrols

The Association is expanding our security patrol program to include residents that bike and/or walk their pets in the neighborhood.  Click here for more information on this unique and beneficial program.

Greenlawn/Neptune Channel Dredging

The main channel dredging has been completed.  The 2011 assessment calculated for the ten year payoff has been mailed to abutting property owners.  If your property taxes are paid in November you get the maximum early payment discount.  The following information was received from Paul Semenec, Sarasota County, on Nov. 17, 2011.  Click here for their payoff schedule in PDF format:

The 2011 tax bill, with the one-tenth payment for the Neptune assessment, must be paid since the bills have already been mailed.  Once that bill is paid, a property owner can pay off the remainder of the assessment.  If the tax bill is paid in November 2011, and the payoff can be made prior to the end of November, the payoff amount is $5,521.79.  The payoff amount for December 2011 is $5,549.59.  The payoff amount for January 2012 is $5,577.39.  Paul Semenec can be contacted at any time (psemenec@scgov.net or 941-232-5541) during the next nine years for a payoff amount in any particular month.

The clerks in the Tax Collector’s office do not know the process for early payoff; therefore, the check should be made out to the Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners but mailed to: Paul Semenec, Public Works, 1001 Sarasota Center Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34240.  The check will be passed on to a specific administrative staff member who knows the process of submitting the check to the tax collector and removing a property owner from the assessment tax roll.

Michael Conn, MSC Environmental Services, has been contracted to obtain the surveys and complete the engineering drawings to get the individual permits for those that have chosen to have their personal docks dredged.   The dredging permits have recently been issued and selection of a dredging contractor is in process.  Michael Conn can be reached at 941-587-7817 or:  MSCEnvironmentalServices@comcast.net  .

OGA Business Meeting

The Association Business meeting was held on Feb. 11, 2011 at the New Hope Baptist Church.  The $17, 451 Association budget for 2011 was presented the Treasurer and the committee chairs gave updates of their activities.  Click here to view the 2010 expenditures and the 2011 budget documents.  Deputy Hill, Sarasota Sheriff's Dept. talked about the importance of the Security Patrol in our neighborhood.  He was very impressed that the members of the Security Patrol had all worn their bright green patrol T-Shirts to the meeting to show their enthusiasm for this important function of the Association.  The minutes from the meeting are here.
